Castello di Farnetella Lucilla IGT 1999, Tuscany, Italy pad
Robert Parker 91 points Drink 2001-2008 One of the great buys in the wine marketplace. A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot aged for ten months in French barriques, it boasts an explosive nose of smoke, blackberry, plum, and cassis fruit, leather, and pencil shavings. Dense, full-bodied, and voluptuously-textured, it is a hedonistic turn-on that also satisfies the taster's intellectual cravings. Drink it over the next 5-7 years. 1999 Castello di Farnetella Lucilla IGT, Tuscany, Italy a proprietary Blend (a dry red table wine) (Available while current inventory lasts.)750ml

1999 Fontodi Chianti Classico Cru Sorbo, Tuscany, Italy rated 91 points by Robert Parker. Drink 2002-2014, while it may appear expensive, the sensational 1999 Chianti Classico Cru Sorbo (a barrique-aged blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a top-flight effort. The color is a deep ruby/purple. The nose offers up gorgeously sweet, expansive aromas of melted licorice, black cherries, currants, underbrush, and a hint of camphor. Dense, chewy, full-bodied, and fabulously pure, with a multilayered, textured mid-palate as well as a long, savory, well-delineated, moderately tannic finish, this is a compelling Chianti to drink now and over the next 10-12 years. Drink 2001-2011, the knock-out 1999 Chianti Classico (100% Sangiovese) provides evidence of just how terrific this vintage is in Tuscany, particularly for Chianti. Complex aromas of new saddle leather, jammy black cherry liqueur, and other black fruits jump from the glass of this dense ruby-colored wine. There are layers of fruit and extraction, full body, no hard edges, and an explosive, long finish that lasts for nearly 30 seconds. Enjoy it now and over the next decade. Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino 2004, Tuscany, Italy, 750mlValdicava Rosso di Montalcino 2004, Tuscany, Italy, 750mlpad
"Vincenzo Abruzzesi continues to regularly out-perform the vast majority of his peers in Montalcino, many with – in theory – better vineyards. But sticking to task in hand, as opposed to sleeping at the switch, can do wonders. Just what hard work and integrity can do are already evident in the 2004 Rosso di Montalcino, once again one of the best in the appellation and far superior to the level of the vintage itself in its ripeness, elegance, length, and freshness." Robert Parker

Tuscany Wine Information

Of Italy's regions, Tuscany's revolution is probably the most noticeable by wine drinkers worldwide as this region shifted from a supplier of straw basket Chianti to one of the nation's most creative producers of premium wine.

Chianti is the region's most obvious center of progress but much has been made of Tuscany's other classical reds including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Carmignano. Furthermore, the growing reputation of table wines known as Super Tuscans as well as the astounding improvement of white wine has definitely reinforced the new found reputation of this central region. Chianti remains dominant within Tuscany's viticulture for several reasons. It is the most widely sold of Italy's classified wines and it is available in a range of styles as varied as the many varietals, regions and inhabitants of Italy. Light and quaffable at times, rich, deep and even austere at others, Chianti reflects the soil and climate of the distinct sub zones in which it is made as well as the individuality of the producers. Since being elevated to Docg status in 1984, Chianti's quality has greatly increased while volume has diminished. Chianti's binding force, however, is Sangiovese, used to make all of the classified wines. Although several other varietals including Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo are blended in, emphasis is almost always on Sangiovese.

Sangiovese and its clones, Brunello, Sangioveto and Montepulciano's Prugnolo Gentile, are ranked among the world's most noble varietals. Legendary Tuscan wines include Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Carmignano, worthy of special mention for having been under the protection of Tuscany's Grand Duke in 1716 essentially making it one of the first wine zones and Morellino di Scansano, further south, where Sangiovese based wines of excellent quality are produced. Tuscany's whites are also enjoying new popularity as wines such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Galestro grow in complexity and character.
